YAMAHA R1 REVIEW

An owner’s, in period, Yamaha R1 review of a 1998 (launch year) motorcycle.

Early, 1998, Yamaha R1. Recognisable by different side decals.

One of the top 5 cars owned was a motorbike! The iconic, we can say that now(?), Yamaha R1.

First version from 1998. Got it a few days after passing my test and had to ride home in the wet and dark in London and on the M25. Was told it was a killer, but like most of that sort of nonsense talk, the answer is be sensible. Which I was until I wasn’t… Would pull 150mph anywhere. Felt like you required a neck like a fighter pilot.

Used it to commute between Kington on the Welsh Border with England and Putney, London. Really, really comfy. Better than many of the BMW bikes I had.

This would probably get you arrested now, but you could switch the ignition on and off and cause a backfire to make pedestrians jump.

Got the occasional accidental wheelie from it and luckily never fell off as had and have no talent in this area.

Akrapovic exhaust sounded superb.

CONCLUSION

Still quick now and getting on to be a collector’s item. Still looks good?

NB: Always felt the 1998 bike was better and more edgy than the 1999 one, but what do I know?
