FERRARI F355 BERLINETTA REVIEW

Sounded incredible and set car alarms off when going past at high revs. A screamer. Handling fantastic. So fast. Reasonably compact and with decent ground clearance, so good for London. Used it for commuting and did about 6000 miles in six months. A lot more than many Ferrari do in a car lifetime. Always use my vehicles.

Bit of a story to this one, so sorry if long, but hopefully interesting.

Collected from Frankfurt Ferrari and drove back overnight after a fraught deal where myself and a fella called Jon Day, formerly of Porsche, thought we may have lost all the money. The F355 broke down on my drive the next day due. Immobiliser issue. Felt like it was trying to care for me and got me home before dying.

Was totally reliable after that apart from a flat battery. That was interesting. The battery is in front of the RHS wheel and you need to remove the wheel/tyre, only to find the car does not come with a jack. So bought a jack and could not get under the car. Obvs. Dig a hole in the gravel drive. Battery replaced, you had to run the car for twenty minutes or so to reset the computer.

Bought some little caravan dimple mirrors to put on side rear view mirrors so I could judge space available when going over bridges in London that had width restrictions. Worked perfectly. Servicing important, as next owner found when he did not do it. A belt slipped and he destroyed the engine.

The rear buttresses kept cracking and needed repainting.

ANECDOTES

Two anecdotes, but there were loads. Such a car:

1) Saw in the distance a broken down car with bonnet up on side of A3 (a road in the UK). Decided, with newly fitted loud exhaust, to do a high speed flyby on the inside lane. As drew alongside fleetingly saw a Police motorcyclist, so as only going to next junction floored it and promptly forgot about incident. Two weeks later going through Guildford, got pulled by a Police motorcyclist who described attending a broken down car and this red vehicle shot past and all he got was the first two letters of the plate… A1. He then looked at my plate for dramatic effect and said if he ever saw me driving like a fool again he would make sure I got pulled on every journey around Surrey.

2) Did an illegal u-turn outside Harrods and completely muffed it up. A bloke in a Fiat Uno shouted “Couldn’t afford a RHD one mate!!!???”. That hurt as it was so true.

CONCLUSION

A great car, but most Porsche 911 are better. FerrariChat F355 forum recommended.
